Chinese ambassador Visits Yehudi Menuhin School

On 14th November the Chinese Ambassador and his wife visited the Yehudi Menuhin to meet the school’s governors and teachers as well as the Chinese students who are preparing for a life in music at this famous school in Surrey.
Founded in 1963 by the celebrated violinist, Yehudi Menuhin, the school manifests his pioneering vision for a stimulating academic environment in which musically-gifted children, of all nationalities and socio-economic backgrounds, can hone their talents. 
Zheng Zeguang was warmly received by the school’s leadership, including David Buckley the Chair of Governors, and Head of the school Robin Haskins, who provided a detailed introduction to the school’s history, educational philosophy, and its cooperation with China.
Ambassador Zheng noted that the School is renowned for its world-class teaching and rich humanistic tradition, and that it has nurtured many outstanding Chinese artists and made significant contributions to cultural and artistic exchanges between China and the UK. Since the establishment of the Yehudi Menuhin School Qingdao in 2022, the two schools have used music as a bridge to play a unique role in promoting youth exchanges and mutual cultural learning between the two countries. The Chinese side welcomes the Yehudi Menuhin School’s deepening engagement and co-operation with China in music education, youth exchanges, and talent development.

New challenges for China

Zheng Zequang opens the seminar

NCP leader Andy Brooks joined social scientists, businessmen, solidarity workers and other communists for an economic seminar at the Chinese embassy in London last week. 
And the Chinese ambassador, Zheng Zeguang, opened on the new developments in China and the opportunities it gave to the world that was the theme of the symposium and the discussion that followed.
He said China is marching towards the second Centenary Goal – a call to action for the entire country to seize the momentum and advance Chinese modernisation.
With this meeting, the Communist Party of China with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core sets to unite and lead the Chinese people to write yet another chapter on the miracles of rapid economic growth and long-term social stability and to open up new horizons for Chinese modernisation.
China was ready to share opportunities and seek common development with the world. China cannot develop in isolation from the world, while the world cannot prosper without China. While pursuing modernisation, China will strive to safeguard world peace and development.
Zheng pointed out that since last year, under the strategic guidance of the leaders from both China and Britain, positive progress has been made in China-UK relations. But, from time to time, this relationship has also been undermined by anti-China forces. The improvement and development of China-UK relations is in the fundamental interest of people in both countries, and it requires the concerted efforts of both sides.
The UK side should have the right perspective. Those who attack China by touting "China threat" and fabricating lies are ignorant and arrogant. They do not represent the mainstream of the UK, and their attempts are doomed to failure. Both sides should uphold mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs. The UK must honour its commitment, and properly handle Taiwan-related issues in accordance with the one-China principle. The two sides should commit to mutually-beneficial cooperation, create new highlights of cooperation and bring more benefits to the two peoples.
In his contribution Andy Brooks said “stable growth, stable policies and stable expectations – this is what the people want. China's development follows a clear direction that is taken with confidence and determination...this is China’s answer to Western calls for tariff walls and trade wars. China's approach to development is not about fighting for your own corner but about serving the people for the benefit of the entire world...
“The imperialists think that their guns will ensure that they can ignore the will of the people for as long as they like. But they were proved wrong in the 20th  century and they will be proved wrong today. The days when people listened to the rich men who told us that the greatest virtue of humanity was the possession of the largest amount of money are over...
Everywhere we look in the capitalist world we see unemployment, homelessness, poverty, drug abuse and crime. The symptoms of industrial decline, inflationary pressures, stock market volatility and economic stagnation. This is capitalism. And working people are being made to carry the burden of its failure. But in People’s China working people aren’t simply reacting to global challenges – they are shaping the very future of our world”. 

Celebrating China’s victory over fascism

NCP leader Andy Brooks joined hundreds of music-lovers to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War last week. The Chinese Ambassador Zheng Zeguang and his wife Counsellor Hua Mei were the guests of honour at the Royal College of Music in London’s West End  to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
The event with the theme Honour History for a Better Future was supported by the Chinese Embassy and the Bank of China. And other guests included the Labour peer Lord Davidson and Timothy Hailes, the Lord Mayor Elect of the City of London, along with members of the Chinese community in Britain and representatives of Anglo-Chinese business and cultural bodies.
Ambassador Zheng said that 80 years ago the Chinese people fought heroically, made huge national sacrifices and defeated the Japanese aggressors. The Chinese people and the British people fought shoulder to shoulder as allies, made great contributions to the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War, and helped to establish a new international order. China has always been a peace-loving nation...this concert in London is intended to use music to remember history, honour those who gave their lives for the cause of justice, express an aspiration for world peace, and reaffirm a commitment to building a community with a shared future for humanity.
The concert featured ten pieces of Chinese and Western music presented by the Hunan Provincial Song & Dance Theatre and New Elements Music and guest performances from the London City Orchestra and the Camden Philharmonic.
 It opened with a stirring rendition of Ode to the Red Flag, followed by classics from both countries, including the haunting theme from Schindler's List and Elgar’s Nimrod which is traditionally played on Remembrance Day in the UK. Chinese favourites included Defend the Yellow River and My Motherland performed by the Chinese Embassy Choir, the Bank of China London Branch Choir, and the London Chinese Philharmonic Choir. The Chinese spirit of resistance and love for their motherland conveyed in the two songs resonated deeply with the audience, who responded with prolonged applause and acclaim.

Welcoming the Chinese New Year!

Chinese Ambassador Zheng Zeguang joined tens of thousands of Londoners celebrating the start of the Chinese New Year in the heart of the capital last weekend. Some 800,000 people joined in the Spring Festival celebrations organised by the London Chinatown Chinese Association (LCCA) in Trafalgar Square, Chinatown and other landmark places. 
The LCCA has hosted Chinese New Year celebrations in Trafalgar Square for 24 consecutive years, making it the largest Chinese New Year celebration event outside Asia. This year's opening ceremony lasted for six hours, with lion and dragon dances enchanting the audience. Similar performances and more including parade floats were also organised in Chinatown and Piccadilly Circus, attracting tourists from all over the world who tasted first-hand the charm of traditional Chinese culture.
Ambassador Zheng said that the Spring Festival, the social practices of the Chinese people celebrating the traditional new year, has now been officially designated as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, which adds a particular meaning to this year’s grand celebrations. The Chinese New Year celebration is all about renewal, family unity, and prosperity. And this is exactly what people from across the UK and beyond have gathered here for--to celebrate peace, solidarity, friendship and collaboration. It also shows their support for China-UK friendship and cooperation.
He thanked the LCCA for its long-standing effort in promoting cultural, educational and commercial cooperation between the two countries, and extended best wishes for the Chinese New Year to the Chinese community, students and Chinese-funded institutions in the UK and to people across the UK and all over the world.

NCP leader Andy Brooks took part in a seminar with other communists, academics and businessmen at the Chinese embassy in London last week to celebrate the Chinese New Year and engage in in-depth discussions on China’s socialist path and the global significance of building a community with a shared future for humanity.
The Chinese ambassador, Zheng Zeguang, delivered a keynote address in which he pointed out that building a global community with a shared future is the core tenet of Xi Jinping Thought on diplomacy. It is the Communist Party of China’s answer to the question of what kind of world we should build and how to build it. It is also the noble goal pursued by China in conducting major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics in the new era.
He pointed out that this has developed from a conceptual proposition to a scientific system, from a promising vision to substantive actions and from a Chinese initiative to an international consensus that has become a glorious banner leading the progress of the times.
 Over the past year China’s economy grew by 5.2 per cent, contributing about one-third of the global economic growth. China's rapid green and low-carbon transition propelled global sustainable development. And China shared more development opportunities with the world through expanded high-level opening up.
China made active efforts to improve relations between other major countries, successfully mediated a historic reconciliation between Saudi Arabia and Iran, and played a constructive role in addressing regional hotspots such as the Palestine-Israel conflict and the Ukraine crisis, making new contributions to world peace.
China actively contributed to the UAE Consensus at the COP28 UN Climate Change Conference, enhanced solidarity of the Global South, promoted the historic expansion of BRICS and gave support to the African Union in joining the G20, playing an important role in improving global governance.
Ambassador Zheng said People’s China is calling for an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalisation. “We will work with all countries to build a community with a shared future for mankind. We call on all countries to uphold dialogue and cooperation and oppose rivalry and confrontation, uphold peace and stability and oppose conflict and war, uphold openness and inclusiveness and oppose “decoupling” and suppression, uphold mutual learning and oppose clash of civilisations, and uphold true multilateralism and oppose unilateralism and bullying” he declared.
China's commitment to interpreting and promoting building a community with a shared future for mankind through its actions serves as a model for the international community. Western disinformation cannot hide this truth as China's proposal and practice are being welcomed and endorsed by a growing number of countries and their people. The participants expressed their readiness to strengthen exchanges and dialogue with China, and make unremitting efforts to build a better world.

East Meets West in London

East meets West

The East literally met the West at a concert in London that combined Chinese and Western cultures and showcased brilliant cultural exchanges between China and the world. Some 800 people packed the Cadogan Hall in Chelsea last week for an East Meets West concert presented by the China Performing Arts Agency and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
    Honoured guests included the Chinese ambassador Zheng Zeguang and other Chinese diplomats as well as classical virtuosos and other guests from China and the UK.
    On the night Cadogan Hall was adorned in Chinese red and filled with applause and cheers. Internationally acclaimed conductor Qian Junping led the London Philharmonic Orchestra with featured Chinese violinist Ning Feng and classical guitarist Yang Xuefei.
    The programme featured celebrated and ground-breaking works by acclaimed Chinese composers Chen Qigang, Tan Dun, Wang Xilin, Zhou Tian, and Fu Renchang alongside Western composers Edward Elgar and John Brunning.
    The concert started with the Torch Festival, a vibrant, rousing piece depicting the traditional fire festival of ethnic groups in China's Yunnan province. This was followed by the Orchestra's performance of Elgar's classic Cockaigne overture. Ning Feng's passionate performance of the Violin Concerto No.1 incorporated traditional Chinese sounds scored for Western symphony orchestra and Western solo instruments, resulting in modern East-meets-West sonic experiences. The concert ended with the Gift which exhibited China’s profound culture and demonstrated the charm of exchanges and mutual learning between the two cultures.
    "I really hope that Chinese music can be performed more, and also be accepted and liked by more people in the West," said Yang Xuefei, one of the Chinese artists.
    After the concert, Ambassador Zheng Zeguang met with the Chinese musicians and expressed his appreciation to them for their efforts and contributions to cultural exchanges between China and the world. He also encouraged them to use their strength, talent and wisdom for the promotion of people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
    Founded in 1932, the London Philharmonic Orchestra is one of London’s five major orchestras and the largest orchestra in Britain. The Orchestra made its first China tour in 1973 and it has valued the cultural exchange and cooperation between the two countries over the years. On 4th November 2022, the London Philharmonic Orchestra held a special concert to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of China-UK diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level.
    The London Philharmonic’s principal piccolo Stewart Mcllwham and double bassist Laura Murphy both mentioned their unforgettable collaboration with Tan Dun, a leading figure in contemporary classic music, during the earlier Spring Festival at the beginning of the year. They have been embracing Chinese music as well.
    "I especially like hearing Chinese traditional instruments in contrast with ours," says Laura. She also mentioned her love of Chinese composers' works, which are "very melodic and harmonious”.
    The orchestra used to travel to China on a regular basis before the Covid pandemic, enabling them to get to know more about the Chinese music and musicians. Now, with the restrictions lifted at the borders, many artists have been looking forward to a journey back there soon. "Music is a common language that we can share, so it's a pleasure for us to be doing this," she said.

Putting people first

People’s China always puts people first and that’s what the Zheng Zeguang, the Chinese ambassador in London told the readers of the Guardian last week in an article outlining his country’s response to the continuing Covid crisis.Zheng stressed that over the past three years, China has always put people and their lives left, right and centre while it tries to keep Covid under control, and promote economic and social development. China’s response policies have been effective, science-based and in line with China’s national conditions.
    The Chinese ambassador underlined that as the Covid-19 situation in China continues to improve, the effects of policies to stabilise economic growth continue to emerge, and the exchange of Chinese and foreign personnel becomes easier, China’s long-subdued consumer demand will be released, investor confidence will be boosted and the economy will rebound strongly. This is good news for not just China but the entire global economy.

When Britain and China fought as one

On 1st October 1942, an American submarine sank a Japanese troop ship off Shanghai. Some 700 Japanese soldiers scrambled to safety when the Lisbon Maru went down. The 1,800-odd British POWs on board the ship were not so lucky. Many died trapped in the holds that had been sealed by the Japanese soldiers. Others managed to break through the hatches to take their chances in the water. Some were picked up by Japanese craft. Others, 384 in all, were rescued by local Chinese fishermen.
    And on 26 August, Chinese Ambassador Zheng Zeguang called on Denise Wynne, the daughter of one of the survivors, at her home in Chalford, Gloucestershire to deliver a letter from President Xi Jinping.
    Mrs Wynne had written to the leader of the People’s Republic of China to thank him for mentioning this part of history during his visit to Britain in 2015 and to express the firm support of the families of the survivors of Lisbon Maru for the friendship between the Chinese and British peoples from generation to generation.
    In his reply the Chinese President said the rescue of the POWs was an important testimony to China and the UK fighting shoulder to shoulder as allies against fascist aggression during the Second World War. It is also a historical episode epitomising the profound friendship forged between the people of our two countries. The President wrote that he knew the episode well and made a point of bringing up the story during his visit to the UK in 2015.
    President Xi stressed that this year marks the 50th anniversary of ambassadorial-level diplomatic relations between China and the UK. Over the past half a century, and owing to the hard work and dedication of numerous friendly personnel from both countries, China-UK bilateral relationship has kept moving forward. The President hopes that the families of the survivors of the Lisbon Maru will continue to work for the advancement of friendship between our two countries, and he looked forward to positive contributions from more British friends to the growth of China-UK relations.
